Matched Pairs Design vs Randomized Block Design

what is matched pairs design

I created this website to help researchers conduct studies from concept to publication. Keep in mind that, in general, we prefer to analyze the effect of variables that CAN be modified by people, such as smoking for example. Because once we prove the influence of these risk factors on the outcome, we can takes steps to help people modify their lifestyle in a certain direction.

Random Allocation

Let’s explore this design’s essence and its advantages in research. A new prep class was designed to improve SAT test scores. Their scores on two practice exams were recorded, one before the class and one after. Understanding matched pair design statistics is crucial for precise data analysis. By recognizing the value of pairing subjects, researchers can significantly reduce variability.

The alternative hypothesis is negative, meaning there is less pain felt after hypnotism. The score should be lower after hypnotism, so the difference ought to be negative to indicate improvement. In this model we take the difference of each pair and create a new population of differences, so if effect, the hypothesis test is a one population test of mean that we already covered in the prior section. Condition one attempted to recall a list of words that were organized into meaningful categories; condition two attempted to recall the same words, randomly grouped on the page. To assess the effect of the organization on recall, a researcher randomly assigned student volunteers to two conditions.

Statology Study

A confounding variable could be an extraneous variable that has not been controlled. The variable the experimenter manipulates (i.e., changes) is assumed to have a direct effect on the dependent variable. At the end of this period, their reading was reassessed, and a reading improvement score was calculated. They were then taught using scheme two for a further 20 weeks, and another reading improvement score for this period was calculated. The reading improvement scores for each child were then compared.

Two Sample Z-Test: Definition, Formula, and Example

A study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of hypnotism in reducing pain. Results for randomly selected subjects are shown in the figure below. The “before” value is matched to an “after” value and the differences are calculated.

An Introduction to the Negative Binomial Distribution

There are a few outstanding benefits and a few expected disadvantages of utilizing a matched-pairs design. In this design, members are brought together because of a particular attribute or factors applicable to the concentrate and afterward split into various circumstances. A member will then be allotted to the control group in each pair, and the other member will be assigned to the trial group. The strategies are then equivalent to the free groups’ plan.

AP Statistics:Table of Contents

For instance, it probably won’t be difficult to come by 50 females to use as matches, yet it very well may be very elusive for 50 female matches in which each pair matches precisely on age. One of the major problems of matching is the difficulty to find appropriate matches. In some cases we may be forced to remove a number of participants from the study if appropriate matches could not be found.

This similarity is crucial because it controls confounding variables, focusing solely on the treatment effects. In a Matched Pair Design, one subject from each pair receives one treatment, and the other subject receives another treatment. Researchers often use this design to tease apart the differences that the treatments may elicit. Delving into the realm of statistics, we often encounter experimental designs that aim to reduce variability and improve the reliability of results. It’s a tactic researchers employ to compare two treatments while minimizing differences between the subjects.

How to Plot a Table in R (With Example)

This method isolates the factor’s effect and minimizes biases. Think of matched pairs design like a before-and-after makeover show. Each participant is paired with someone who has similar physical features, and then one person gets a makeover while the other remains unchanged. By comparing their outcomes, we can see if the makeover had any effect. This helps to eliminate confounding variables and increase the validity of the study. There are some notable advantages and some potential disadvantages of using a matched pairs design.

It can be quite time-consuming to find subjects who match on certain variables, particularly if you use two or more variables. For example, it might not be hard to find 50 females to use as pairs, but it could be quite hard to find 50 female pairs in which each pair matches exactly on age. Matched pair experiments shine in statistical analysis. They allow researchers to compare two sets of data that are linked. But once the experiment ends, the real work begins—analyzing the data.

The only way to match perfectly is to find identical twins who essentially share the same genetic code, which is actually why identical twins are often used in matched pairs studies. Matched pairs design increases result accuracy by pairing similar subjects, reducing variability. It enables controlling for participant-specific variables, enhancing statistical power.

The advantage of the matched pair design is clear in this example. The sample standard deviation for the Hertz prices is $5.23 and for Avis it is $5.62. Much of this variability is due to the cities, and the matched pairs design dramatically reduces the standard deviation to $2.51, meaning the matched pairs t‐test has significantly more power in this example.

How to Make Paper Snowflakes

Medium to heavy-weight paper (butcher paper, card stock, or text-weight poster paper) is harder to cut but is more sturdy for decorating. Make beautiful, fast, and easy holiday decorations with The Kwendy Home‘s enhanced paper bag snowflake tutorial. Opt for white or brown paper lunch bags, or even ones with pre-existing designs, to craft intricate, eye-catching snowflakes perfect for any festive setting. All you need are seven paper bags, scissors, a hole punch, glue gun, and some optional display accessories like thin wire or Command hooks. Making paper snowflakes is a fun and creative way to decorate your space.

What can you do with paper snowflakes?

simple snowflake design

Children’s scissors often aren’t strong enough to cut through all the layers of paper. If you’re having trouble cutting through printer paper, try parchment paper instead. Parchment paper is much thinner than regular paper which makes it easier to cut. Run your fingers along the diagonal edge to make a fold.

Step 7: Add Color

Cut off the bottom portion of the paper (you’re now left with a triangle and when unfolded it’s a square piece of paper). Grab a piece of letter size paper (a lightweight paper is best). Take the top corner and fold (meeting at the other side). Make charming Paper Snowflakes with ease, following the guide by Morrison Polkinghorne. This DIY project is perfect for adding a festive touch to your decorations. To begin, you’ll need basic materials like a card, a sharp knife, a metal ruler, a cutting board, double-sided tape, scissors, a needle, and thread.

You can see angled lines, series of circles, and our own designs. Use the same simple drawing materials to create this easy black-and-white Op Art drawing. Once you get the hang of drawing one, you can make infinite snowflake drawings all year long. Fold your paper diagonally, creating a triangle, then fold it in half again to form a smaller triangle. On this page, you'll find an easy-to-follow tutorial that will guide you through the delightful journey of crafting your very own paper snowflakes. There are so many fun ways to use your paper snowflakes for winter and Christmas decorations, and gift giving. It is helpful to draw a design on the wedge first with light pencil lines, then cut it out, especially if you want to make elegant paper snowflakes for winter and Christmas decorations.

Can making paper snowflakes be educational for kids?

You should have a perfect triangle shape, with a long rectangular shape above it. Using a standard piece of letter sized printer paper, take the bottom right corner of the paper and bring it up and over to the left edge. The bottom edge should line up perfectly with the left edge. You can use a protractor, or just estimate the size of the sections, which is what we did here. It’s quite easy, check out the video tutorial above if you are not sure about this step. Can't decide between wanting to feel light and fresh and having the perfect amount of depth to match your smoky eye?

Place your snowflake stencil on top of another piece of paper then use paint to create your snowflake. I love the tissue paper and mosaic ideas and I’ve shared to this page a little video of the snowflake template in action being used with another of these crafts. As well as the free snowflake templates I’ll also be sharing lots of ideas for ways which you can use these with your child. The easiest way to cut the paper into a perfect square is to fold one corner of the paper to meet the opposite edge, creating a triangle and a rectangle.

simple snowflake design

It teaches them about symmetry, geometry, and the art of precision while enhancing their fine motor skills. Take your square paper and fold it in half diagonally to form a triangle. For more precise snowflakes, you can divide the triangle into three equal parts. A protractor can be handy here to measure each section at a 30-degree angle. Adjust your folds until the three parts are equal, but refrain from creasing the paper until your folds align perfectly for the best symmetry.

This will make them more resistant to tearing and moisture. You can also embellish your paper snowflakes with glitter glue to make them even fancier. Need a relaxing activity for older kids, teens, or adults? Snowflake coloring pages are great for kids and adults!

"And falls can be very devastating, could have very devastating health consequences, especially for the oldest old," he says. "In general, we would like to have older homeowners ... matched with their housing in a much better way than we currently have."

Taken together, they include the $95 billion aid package championed by Biden, with some changes from the version the Senate passed two months ago. Since mid-March, TikTok has spent $5 million on TV ads opposing the legislation, according to AdImpact, an advertising tracking firm. The ads have included a diverse group of content creators, including a nun, extolling the positive impacts of the platform on their lives and arguing a ban would trample on the 1st Amendment. The company has also encouraged its users to contact Congress, and some lawmakers have received profanity-laced calls. In 2020, federal courts blocked an executive order issued by then-President Trump to ban TikTok after the company sued on the grounds that the order violated free speech and due process rights.

For instance, a lower-income homeowner of a deteriorating row house might be willing to a swap for a newer, smaller apartment in an elevator building, if there was a program for that. Baby boomer empty nesters own twice as many of the country's three-bedroom-or-larger homes, compared with millennials with kids, according to a recent analysis from Redfin. That means those larger homes aren't hitting the market, one factor limiting the supply for the younger generations who could use those extra bedrooms. It's a difficult situation not just for renters, but also for prospective home buyers.

In the end, it went to a family that never saw the property in person, the French newspaper reported. The first was in 2021, and over 90 people applied, Blondieau told Ouest France. Once the deed is signed, renovations must begin within five months and be completed by July 2028. "The goal is for the new owner to participate in the life of the neighborhood," Blondieau said. According to the application, anyone looking to make the property a second home or rent it out will be rejected.

"The bill buys time to figure out a real solution, while putting space between passage and the election." That means TikTok being forced to sell, or face a possible ban, is on the fast-track to becoming law. Before the vote, former President Donald Trump issued a confusing statement that sympathized with both the pro- and anti-Ukraine aid factions of the GOP without taking a clear position. The Ukraine aid bill comes at a crucial time in the country’s war with Russia, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed the urgent need for weapons and supplies to continue defending Ukraine from Russian attacks. Lawmakers waved Ukrainian flags and cheered upon the Ukraine bill's passage.

The decision by House Republicans to include TikTok as part of a larger foreign aid package, a priority for President Biden with broad congressional support for Ukraine and Israel, fast-tracked the ban after an earlier version had stalled in the Senate. A standalone bill with a shorter, six-month selling deadline passed the House in March by an overwhelming bipartisan vote as Democrats and Republicans voiced national security concerns about the app’s owner, the Chinese technology firm ByteDance Ltd. "That's because it's multifloor living. It's stairs. It's also other upkeep." Some homeowners are also affected by what's known as the mortgage lock-in effect. While 54% of baby boomer homeowners own their homes free and clear, according to Redfin, most of those with mortgages have low rates.

The French town of Saint-Amand-Montrond is selling a 828-square-foot house for 1 euro or $1.07 USD. It's a two-level house with two bedrooms and one and a half bathrooms. The property also includes a courtyard and a garage, according to Ouest France, and is located in the city center of the small town. For a few years now, countries all over the world have gone viral for selling off abandoned or dilapidated properties for around $1 dollar — an often symbolic price.

His administration brokered a deal that would have had U.S. corporations Oracle and Walmart take a large stake in TikTok. The sale never went through for a number of reasons; one was China, which imposed stricter export controls on its technology providers. The bill’s quick path through Congress is extraordinary because it targets one company and because Congress has taken a hands-off approach to tech regulation for decades.

Texas’ ban was challenged last year by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, which argued in a lawsuit that the policy was impeding academic freedom because it extended to public universities. The U.S. government has not publicly provided evidence that shows TikTok shared U.S. user data with the Chinese government or tinkered with the company’s popular algorithm, which influences what Americans see. The company has indicated that it would likely go to court to try to block the law if it passes, arguing it would deprive the app’s millions of users of their 1st Amendment rights. For instance, the government could create a tax credit to encourage developers to build accessible housing, akin to the Low Income Housing Tax Credit that incentivizes building affordable housing. "You've got a pure housing mismatch for older homeowners. They are mismatched physically or functionally with the house that they're in," says Gary Engelhardt, an economist at Syracuse University who studies aging and housing markets.

Eco Homes: 8 of the Most Sustainable Features to Consider, According to Experts

modern 2 story house design

In the United States, as of July 2023, the average cost to build a new home can range anywhere from $150+ to $500+ per square foot. However, regarding modern homes specifically, you might expect to be on the higher end of this spectrum or even exceed it due to the factors mentioned earlier. The term "modern home" refers more to a style of architecture than a specific construction period. Modernist architecture emerged in the early 20th century, roughly around the 1920s, as a reaction to traditional and heavily ornamented Victorian designs. There are some disadvantages to a two story layout that should be considered. Stairways add to the cost of the home build and can take up 100 square feet or more of space.

I think it’s inherently a critique on a political pressure and this congressional pressure that we saw build up against, of course, Claudine Gay at Harvard and Magill at UPenn. And it’s a university on top of all that that has a real history of activism dating back to the 1960s. So when students are recruited or choose to come to Columbia, they’re actively opting into a campus that prides itself on being an activist community.

Floorplan Drawings

If you’re working with a designer to build a brand-new home, it’s imperative to employ passive design, which reduces a house’s ecological footprint by using the local climate and landscape to its advantage. One way to do that is taking note of the orientation of the house in relation to the sun. Once you approve the quote and submit payment, your designer will get to work implementing the changes you requested on your house plan. One of our designers will review your request and provide a custom quote within 3 business days.

There's a modern house plan to fit any family's needs. From Art Deco to the iconic Brady Bunch home, Modern house plans have been on the American home scene for decades and will continue offering alternative expressions for today's homeowners. Modern house plans cover many ideas, concepts, and principles available in the home design industry. Many home designs in this category feature a look and feel that expresses a value for energy efficiency, unique use of space, and exterior and interior features of a modern persuasion. What about empty nesters or families with teenagers? In recent years, the trend for the 2-story house plan has been to include the primary bedroom suite on the first floor, while the other bedrooms (or at least most) are on the second floor.

The 2-story home typically has less roof area than its 1-story counterpart, making them less expensive to maintain. The 2-story design is also typically more fuel-efficient per square foot as fewer outdoor wall and roof areas are exposed to the weather. And so as Isabella and her colleagues at the college newspaper see it, there’s this overall chilling effect that occurs. Some students become fearful that if they participate in any demonstrations, they’re going to face disciplinary action. And there’s something like — I don’t know if it’s quite a contradiction of terms, but there’s a collision of different values at stake. So universities thrive on the ability of students to follow their minds and their voices where they go, to maybe even experiment a little bit and find those things. Nick, if we rewind the clock a few months, we end up at a moment where students at several of the country’s best known universities are protesting Israel’s response to the October 7 attacks, its approach to a war in Gaza. At times, those protests are happening peacefully, at times with rhetoric that is inflammatory. And the result is that the leaders of those universities land before Congress. But the president of Columbia University, which is the subject we’re going to be talking about today, is not one of the leaders who shows up for that testimony.

Organizing a design project: Bottom-Up and Top-Down approach

bottom up design

We will now proceed to unpack the merits and drawbacks of top-down and bottom-up management, offering insights to guide your choice of management style for your organization. Vice versa, while a bottom-up approach focuses on the fundamentals of investments, investors still want to consider systematic effects on individual holdings before making a decision. Generally, while top-down and bottom-up can be very distinctly different both are often used in all types of financial approaches like checks and balances. For example, while a top-down investment fund might primarily focus on investing according to macro trends, it will still look at the fundamentals of its investments before making an investing decision. For example, a portfolio team may be tasked with a bottom-up investing approach within a specified sector like technology.

What is the top-down vs. bottom-up approach?

Top–down approaches are implemented by attaching the stubs in place of the module. But these delay testing of the ultimate functional units of a system until significant design is complete. Bottom-up design contributes to software quality by allowing for better testing of individual components, which can lead to fewer bugs in the final product. It also enhances maintainability by making it easier to update or replace specific components without affecting the entire system. One notable example of successful bottom-up design is the development of the Linux operating system, where individual kernel modules were developed and tested independently before being integrated into the complete system. Bottom-up design allows for early testing of individual components, promotes code reusability, and can lead to more scalable and flexible systems.

Top-Down Vs. Bottom-Up: Which Approach is Better for Your Business?

Sometimes referred to as a stepwise design or decomposition, a system and its goals are broken down into compositional sub-systems in order to gain insight into the smaller aspects that make up a larger system. This format is made more specific with the assistance of black boxes, which make the backward-looking approach easier to follow as upper management pushes down decisions. This delegation of tasks is sometimes referred to as reverse engineering or a big picture outlook because of the way larger goals are fragmented into small tasks that are then handed down to lower level employees. Organizational culture and industry also play a crucial role in the choice of management style. Industries that are more innovative, such as software development and product design, tend to favor bottom-up approaches, as they encourage collaboration and creativity among team members. The top-down approach came to be in the 1970s, when IBM researchers Harlan Mills and Niklaus Wirth developed the top-down approach for software development field.

Fix these common onboarding challenges to boost productivity

The top-down and bottom-up approaches have gained traction in certain sectors of the workforce. Sometimes a highly authoritative upper management and a delegation of tasks is better than employees with fluid roles and a large say in the decisions of a company, and vice versa. Below is a conclusive list of the industries that embody certain management styles over others. There are many industries that benefit from this holistic style of business management. These users embody the use of a pieced together system that creates a more informed, complex company with targeted goals. Sometimes known as parsing, businesses analyze a sequence of information in order to determine its overall function and structure, which leads to the most comprehensive view of a project.

An advocate for the I/O movement and the bottom-up approach, Elton Mayo added to the human relations movement happening during the mid-20th century. Mayo believed that by improving the social aspects of the workplace, the company would ultimately benefit. HR departments dedicated themselves directly to this newfound engagement to employees and their investment in the company. Even more radical divisions of bottom-up management have come to the surface in later years. One such approach is holacracy, which fully leans in to the bottom-up policy and is founded on ideas like transparent and moveable roles in a company, and a circular structure of authority instead of a vertical platform.

Since the decision-making process takes place at just one level of management, they can be finalized, distributed, and implemented much more quickly than decisions that require input from multiple leaders or project stakeholders. The top-down management style is common, which means there’s less of a learning curve for new hires if they came from a company that uses this structure. As a team leader, you can help new team members adjust more quickly by incorporating some familiar elements of top-down methodology into your management style. Then, once an action plan has been created, decision-makers communicate it to the rest of the team to be implemented (usually without much room for adjustment ). LogRocket identifies friction points in the user experience so you can make informed decisions about product and design changes that must happen to hit your goals.

Top-down approach vs. bottom-up approach: What’s the difference?

You should not rely on one approach exclusively, but rather use them in combination to achieve optimal results. One way to do this is to use an iterative or incremental process, where you alternate between top-down and bottom-up phases. The bottom-up approach is based on the assumption that the employees have the best knowledge and experience of the daily operations and challenges of the organization. They are able to provide valuable insights and suggestions that can improve the quality and effectiveness of the decisions. Time is not lost during this testing since it does not wait for all modules to be produced.

Similarly, investors leverage this policy because it is non data-intensive and analyzes the entire economy rather than the ebbs and flows of an individual business or sector of an industry. The top-down style is also leveraged across companies in an effort to budget effectively. Senior project managers create company-wide decisions that trickle down to lower departments.

Advantages of bottom-up management

In addition, when a system has to be developed from some preexisting components, the bottom-up method is superior since it is more appropriate. One challenge with the top-down management approach is that it requires proactive work to keep non-leadership team members feeling engaged, connected, and respected. When all decisions are made at the top, the rest of the team might feel that their feedback and opinions aren’t valued. The development of the top-down and bottom-up approaches was a result of trial and error in managing, maintaining, and achieving success in a business. Although there are great differences in the two styles, both were created by developing a system that resulted in the most success, revenue, and employee happiness. Keeping all employees, business processes, and departments in mind, leaders who adopt the bottom-up approach encourage input from all areas of the organization.

The engineering and management success of this project led to the spread of the top–down approach through IBM and the rest of the computer industry. Among other achievements, Niklaus Wirth, the developer of Pascal programming language, wrote the influential paper Program Development by Stepwise Refinement. Top–down methods were favored in software engineering until the late 1980s,[3] and object-oriented programming assisted in demonstrating the idea that both aspects of top-down and bottom-up programming could be used. In contrast, smaller, growing companies might find the bottom-up approach more suitable, as it encourages innovation, collaboration, and employee engagement.

bottom up design

After that, the product leaders will start assigning initiatives and features to different product managers and product teams, and the actual work of designing and building them will start. Product initiatives are a high-level representation of the steps the product team should take to achieve objectives and move closer to the vision. They are the key themes (a mix of features and tasks) the company will invest in delivering. In product management, top-down and bottom-up approaches are the two ways to prioritize features, align these priorities with stakeholders, create a well-rounded product management strategy, and make informed decisions.

It is a design methodology in which each component is designed as a separate part without any reference to other components in the assembly. In the investing world, top-down investors or investment strategies focus on the macroeconomic environment and cycle. These types of investors usually want to balance consumer discretionary investing against staples depending on the current economy.

Since process-related communication flows top to bottom in top-down companies, it’s easy for individuals and groups to become siloed and eventually feel isolated. Create opportunities for communication across departments, teams, management levels, and even geographical locations to help ensure that your team members can build meaningful relationships with each other. When approaching project objectives from the bottom up, a team will collaborate across all levels to determine what steps need to be taken to achieve overall goals. The bottom-up approach is newer and more flexible than the more formal top-down strategy, which is why it’s more commonly found in industries where disruption and innovation are a priority.

Though it’s important to give team members the opportunity to provide feedback, not everyone is comfortable doing so—especially with leadership in the room. Keep in mind that everyone has different comfort levels and pushing too hard for feedback might stifle honesty or creativity. The bottom-up approach encourages greater buy-in from team members because everyone is given the opportunity to influence decisions regardless of seniority. It also facilitates better relationships between colleagues by offering members of all seniority levels an equal opportunity to influence project outcomes.

These contrasting styles can significantly impact organizational decision-making, employee engagement, and overall performance. This comprehensive guide offers a fresh perspective on these approaches, diving deep into their pros and cons, real-life examples, and best practices for integration. Get ready to discover how to choose and implement the most suitable management style for your organization, leading to a more engaged, motivated, and productive workforce.

They are able to see the big picture and make decisions that align with the overall mission and vision of the organization. Bottom-up testing, which begins at the lowest level of the hierarchy and works its way up, refers to the process of testing crucial modules or functionality at an earlier stage. The primary function of drivers is to satisfy the needs of modules that are either absent or incomplete in order to carry out evaluations of lower-level modules. However, drivers are more difficult to design than stubs since they need more information. The bottom-up strategy, which is used in situations in which the primary module is not yet available, makes use of drivers. When the higher-level modules have not yet been established, drivers are tested to ensure that the lower-level modules function properly.

silent house

White House officials addressed the anti-Israel protests taking place at universities across the country on Wednesday, saying President Biden believes in free speech, but when violent rhetoric and physical intimidation takes place, it must be called out. "Silent House" is another one of those Scream at the Screen movies, in which you want to shout out advice to a character. In this case, a nubile young woman is trapped inside an apparently haunted house for most of the time, and what you want to shout is, Get out of the damn house! Finally, a little beyond the halfway mark, she does escape, running out the front door and flees, weeping and stumbling, down a country road until her Uncle Peter drives along, and they return to the house and she goes back inside. Outside, she meets Peter, who has returned, and sees a young girl on the road who disappears.

Pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses have divided Democrats. Biden's comments are some of his most pointed to date targeting protests that have erupted at college campuses across the country in the months since the Israel-Hamas War began last October. The press secretary was also asked what the president’s personal reaction was to the activity taking place on the college campuses and what his message would be to those peacefully protesting.

Movie Review: Why Were Audiences So Outraged by Silent House?

It’s b, of course, and evidently the notion that we’ve been with Sarah this whole time and in real time and didn’t see her hack the shit out of her dad and uncle is received by the audience as a violation. While speaking at Biden's Earth Day event, applauded "the power of young people shaping the country," pointing to the "peaceful, student-led protests on campuses like Columbia, Yale, Berkeley, and many others." Soon she's reduced to tiptoeing through the darkness calling out "Uncle Peter?" when not long before she was calling "Dad? Daddy?" This is an optimistic girl. Her name is Sarah, and she's played by Elizabeth Olsen, the younger sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley.

Silent House (2011 film)

Sophia also turns out to be a figment of her imagination. John convinces Sarah to untie him, then whips her with his belt. Peter tries to stop him but John mocks Peter's pleas. As his back is turned, Sarah bludgeons his head with a sledgehammer, killing him. Peter begs for mercy and tells her he should have stopped the rape and abuse from the hands of John. Peter’s fate in the aftermath remains a mystery.

She sees a figure searching for her and escapes out the cellar door. "And echoing the rhetoric of terrorist organizations, especially in the wake of the worst massacre committed against the Jewish people since the Holocaust, is despicable. We condemn these statements in the strongest terms," Bates said. The protests came to a head last week when more than 100 student protesters were arrested and suspended after  Columbia University President Minouche Shafik called in the New York Police Department to clear an encampment on the campus' south lawn. Out of safety concerns, Columbia is holding Monday's classes online instead of in person.

"The president believes that free speech debate and nondiscrimination on college campuses are important. They’re important American values and…we will always be very clear about that here," she said. "But you know, protests must be peaceful, you know. Students must be safe. When we see violent rhetoric, we have to call that out. When we see physical intimidation or grotesque, antisemitic remarks, we have to speak that out." The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2011 and was subsequently purchased by Open Road Films and Universal Pictures for distribution. Silent House premiered in United States theaters on March 9, 2012. It opened at number 5 at the U.S. box office, earning $6.6 million during its opening weekend; it would go on to gross a total of $12.8 million domestically.

We saw her not long ago in the challenging lead role of "Martha Marcy May Marlene." In that film, she demonstrated she's a gifted actress, and in "Silent House," she performs a rite of passage for many young actresses, as the endangered heroine of a horror film. Soon after, Sarah panics when she hears John falling down the stairs. She tries to leave the house but all exits are blocked, and she hides from an unknown perpetrator. She finds John unconscious with a head wound and runs to the basement in search of the cellar door that leads outside. She finds a bed and other evidence that someone else has been living there, possibly squatters.

Maybe people are tired of the subjective, I-am-a-camera thing born of the sudden and universal access to hi-def. Maybe, too, they’re fed up with subjectivity as the basis for a work of art and hunger for the clarity of omniscience, even in a low-down genre like horror. Sarah returns with her father and uncle to fix up the family's longtime summerhouse after it was violated by squatters in the off-season. As they work in the dark, Sarah begins to hear sounds from within the walls of the boarded-up building. Although she barely remembers the place, Sarah senses the past may still haunt the home. Biden has faced increasing pressure from young voters and the left flank of his party over his unwavering support of Israel's war in Gaza following the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel.

It’s odd that the CinemaScore rating for Silent House, a more than decent gimmicky scare picture that opened last Friday, is an “F” — suggesting that critics like me are more excited by formal inventiveness than most of the film-going public. The gimmick here is that the camera follows the main character, Sarah (Elizabeth Olsen), for the entirety of the film, beginning with a striking descent as she sits on a rock staring pensively at the water and finishing … I’m not saying just yet. We’re essentially marooned with the girl as the creaks and footsteps and thumps begin, staring out into the darkness with her, staggering and swerving with her, deprived of a larger perspective. With its distant, disharmonious, ambient score that seems to be operating on another level of reality, the film can make you, like its protagonist, sick with fear. I said the house is "apparently" haunted because … well, you'll see.

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., an outspoken supporter of Israel, condemned the reports of antisemitism at Columbia. "Add some tiki torches and it’s Charlottesville for these Jewish students," Fetterman said on X, formerly Twitter, referring to the 2017 white supremacists protests in Charlottesville, Va. that turned violent. Fetterman called on Shafik to "do your job or resign so Columbia can find someone who will."

The movie is a remake of a horror film from Uruguay, and both the original and the remake claim to have been shot in a single take. If it is, it's the most amazing single take since "Russian Ark," beginning with an overhead crane shot on a lake shore and then traveling down a road and into a house and following the heroine upstairs and downstairs and into the basement. That would take one hell of a cameraman, and there are all kinds of shots where the screen goes dark and cuts could obviously be concealed. John, now conscious, is wrapped in plastic and sitting in the living room. Sophia gives Sarah a key to a box containing pedophilic pictures of Sarah as a little girl, implying that John sexually abused her. It is suggested that her recent interactions and hallucinations with the little girl and mystery attacker have been a traumatic repressed memory.

Sarah tries to shoot one of the men with Peter's gun, then hides in her room and begins to show signs of paranoia and psychosis. She experiences hallucinations of traumatic childhood events, including a bloodstain on the bed and the young girl in the bathtub with beer bottles and bloody water. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on Wednesday, ‘We can’t be silent here,’ when it comes to the violent rhetoric and physical threats taking place at college campus protests.

Biden condemns 'alarming surge of antisemitism' amid Columbia chaos

TikTok “will move to the courts for a legal challenge” when the bill is signed, said Michael Beckerman, TikTok’s head of policy in the Americas, in an internal memo on Saturday seen by the South China Morning Post. Protests last week at Columbia raised concerns of antisemitism after Jewish students said they were subjected to acts of hate, intimidation and harassment. "Silent is complicit, and we can’t allow that. We believe in First Amendment rights. We believe in people being able to express themselves in a peaceful manner. But when we’re talking about hateful rhetoric, when we’re talking about violence, we have to call that out. She called the hateful rhetoric coming out of Columbia "vile." "Silence is complicity," Biden said in a written statement Sunday evening. "Even in recent days, we’ve seen harassment and calls for violence against Jews. This blatant antisemitism is reprehensible and dangerous – and it has absolutely no place on college campuses, or anywhere in our country." I think of most thrillers as bags of tricks and admired the ones in Silent House, but the audience sure didn’t and I don’t entirely hold it against them. Would they have been less angry if the house turned out to be full of vengeful ghosties? I think so, but they still wouldn’t have liked the movie much. Maybe the Blair Witch-Paranormal Activity approach has worn out its welcome.

White House vows to not be quiet on violent protests: 'Silent is complicit'

The movie is a remake of a horror film from Uruguay, and both the original and the remake claim to have been shot in a single take. Critics Reviews

Events at the house have caused this memory to reappear, and Sarah is now exacting her revenge. She has been confusing the events of her childhood with what she is doing now, likely due to dissociative identity disorder. She assaults John and Peter in her "intruder" mode while simultaneously wandering the house as a victim trying to escape.

Peter and Sarah discover John's body missing in the house. When the power is cut off, the only light source available to them is the flash on a Polaroid camera. Through a series of camera flashes, Sarah sees the young girl and a man in the room. Sarah hides while two men take pictures, presumably pedophilic in nature, of an unseen girl.

Rabbi Elie Buechler, director of the Orthodox Union-Jewish Learning Initiative on Campus program at Columbia and the all-women’s Barnard, recommended Sunday that Jewish students stay away from the university until safety conditions improve. WASHINGTON ― President Joe Biden called on Americans to speak out against the "alarming surge of antisemitism" in the U.S. following pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University that prompted the school to cancel all in-person classes Monday out of safety concerns. "Students should feel safe. Communities should feel safe, and you know…we can’t stay silent," Jean-Pierre said. "Obviously, it is a deeply painful moment. He sees that. He understands that, and he will always support and believe in free speech and debate and nondiscrimination on college campuses." White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked by a reporter during a briefing on Wednesday what the president thinks of how the administration at Columbia University in New York City has been handling the protests. Grand Princess: Princess Cruises

princess cruise mini suite

The typical inside cabin on the new Discovery Princess measures 166 square feet, with some as big as 175 square feet. By comparison, the typical balcony cabin on Discovery Princess measures 181 square feet, not including a 41-square-foot balcony (for a total of 222 square feet). The California-based brand was a pioneer in adding a large number of balcony cabins to ships, and even its oldest vessels are loaded with balcony cabins — something that can't be said for many of its rivals.

Enhance your voyage with some of the most luxurious accommodations at sea

Photos, floor plan diagrams, and amenities represent typical arrangements and may vary by ship. Certain stateroom categories may vary in size and configuration by ship. Square footage varies based on stateroom category and deck location. In addition, the Royal Class vessels have even larger balcony cabins that Princess calls mini-suites.

Ready to Book Reserve Collection?

Including their balcony space, these cabins measure anywhere from 299 to 329 square feet. While these mini-suite cabins have the word "suite" in their name, we are including them in the balcony cabin category as they generally resemble very large balcony cabins vs. true suites. The typical Princess balcony cabin has twin beds that can be converted into a queen bed, a built-in desk with a chair and a built-in miniature refrigerator.

Princess Cruises ship cabin and suite guide: Everything you want to know

Indulge in this elevated stateroom category featuring our very best mini-suites that include premium services and amenities. With Reserve Collection (formerly known as Club Class), you’ll enjoy everything from a prime mini-suite location and in-room wine set-up to the expedited seating in our exclusive Reserve Dining area. A complimentary glass of bubbly isn't the only perk you enjoy when you choose a Mini-Suite. It's substantially larger than a balcony stateroom and includes a separate seating area with sofa bed as well as two flat-panel TVs. In addition to the great amenities found in all Mini-Suites, you will receive Reserve Collection upgrades, including access to the Reserve Collection Restaurant. Princess's three newest ships — Discovery Princess, Enchanted Princess and Sky Princess — have the line's first truly large standalone suites, dubbed Sky Suites.

As noted above, a significant portion of cabins on all Princess ships are balcony cabins — the category of cabin that everyone wants these days. About 80% of the 1,834 cabins on Princess's six-month-old Enchanted Princess are balcony cabins or suites with balconies, for instance. Compare that to the 72% of cabins on Royal Caribbean's four-year-old Symphony of the Seas that are balcony cabins or suites with balconies.

The latest Celebrity vessels, for instance, offer so-called Iconic Suites that have twice as much interior space as the Sky Suites. Inside cabins on Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas, for instance, measure just 149 square feet — quite a bit less than the inside cabins on Discovery Princess. At the same time, as noted above, Princess vessels have fewer suites than you'll find on the ships operated by such big-ship brands as Royal Caribbean and Celebrity. With an ocean-view cabin, you get a window looking out to the sea, but not an attached balcony where you can sit outside and enjoy the fresh air.

When it comes to rooms, Princess is sort of the Marriott of the big-ship cruise world. Princess also isn't known for enormous and amenity-filled suites.

Card Issuer

That's relatively unusual in the world of big mass-market ships — the niche of cruising in which Princess plays. The luxurious Mini-Suite offers approximately 323 square feet of comfort and a separate seating area with a sofa bed for lounging or sleeping a third passenger. The spacious balcony is approximately 61 square feet and the bathroom offers a combination tub and shower.

Still, you'll find at least a few suites of a decent size on every Princess ship. The line's seven Grand Class vessels each offer two "family suites" at their fronts that can be created by connecting a mini-suite with an adjacent inside cabin to create a six- to eight-person complex. The takeaway here is that you'll have an easier time locking down a balcony cabin on a Princess ship — even an older Princess ship — than you will when booking many of the ships operated by competing big-ship lines. Just 46 of the 1,830 rooms on the line's recently unveiled Discovery Princess are suites, for instance. Believe it or not, that's an improvement from earlier vessels in the same series, some of which have as few as 36 suites.

If you're a fan of balcony cabins, you'll find plenty of options on Princess ships, including standard size balcony cabins and bigger "premium" balcony cabins. You'll also find a lot of larger "mini-suite" balcony cabins on Princess ships. However, you won't find a lot of truly large suites with multiple rooms. However, there also are bigger "premium deluxe balcony" cabins that can measure as much as 233 square feet on the inside (not including the balcony). Some of these have larger-than-normal balconies that can stretch the total square footage to 312 square feet.

princess cruise mini suite

However, you'll find ocean-view cabins on the line's older vessels and also on the line's three newest ships, Discovery Princess, Enchanted Princess and Sky Princess. Choose a luxurious Mini-Suite with balcony which is substantially larger than a Balcony stateroom and receive a complimentary welcome glass of bubbly. Mini-Suites include a separate sitting area with sofa bed and two flat-panel televisions. For families or groups needing a little extra space, Mini-Suites offer an appealing and affordable option.

In addition to beds, a desk and a miniature fridge, premium balcony cabins have a seating area with a sofa bed that can be used for a third passenger in the room. Some also have a pull-down bunk that can accommodate a fourth person. Princess offers a relatively wide range of cabins on its ships, including lots of the sort of cabins that everyone wants — balcony cabins.

However, the ratio of balcony cabins to non-balcony cabins is much higher on older Princess ships than it is on older vessels at many other big-ship lines. An impressive 72% of the 1,000 cabins on Princess's 2003-built Coral Princess, for instance, are balcony cabins. Notably, every single cabin facing the sea on three of the newest Princess ships — Royal Princess, Regal Princess and Majestic Princess — has a balcony. These three vessels are completely devoid of ocean-view cabins (cabins facing the sea that only have a window).

You'll also sometimes find a few ocean-view cabins at the back of Princess vessels, facing the wake. Just note that you'll want to book early if you're aiming for a suite on a Princess ship since there are so few of them. Note, also, that suites tend to sell out early on cruise ships in general. As noted above, three of Princess's newest vessels — Royal Princess, Regal Princess and Majestic Princess — don't have a single ocean-view cabin.

There are two of them on each of the vessels, and they measure a generous 1,792 square feet (though more than half of that space is taken up by a huge wraparound balcony). With two bedrooms plus a living room with a pullout sofa, the Sky Suites are the first Princess accommodations designed for up to five people. On the line's two Coral Class ships — Coral Princess and Island Princess — there are a few "premium" ocean-view cabins that measure a more spacious 212 square feet. If you're the kind of traveler who needs a lot of space, these rooms can be a good choice.

Cruises from Florida

Hugged by the calm, blue-green waters of the Gulf of Mexico on its western coast and the cool, sapphire-blue waters of the Atlantic on its eastern coast, it's a true beach lover's paradise. Thanks to the Sunshine State's location, cruises from Florida provide some of the best and most preferred ports to eastern, western and southern Caribbean isles. In that interview, Hubbard confirmed that the hit duo is in the past tense, at least for now. It’s a split that he attributed to a combination of factors that included differing politics, social media squabbles and solo aspirations. Interest about the state of the partnership intensified in the wake of a Rolling Stone interview with Hubbard to mark the January release of his self-titled debut album. In the final scene, Kelley returns to the baseball diamond at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex, where then-current members of the Seabreeze High School baseball team turn double plays and help him sing the song’s final chorus along with some of the singer’s longtime friends.

The duo decided to pursue solo careers

"The production is great on it. We wrote the hell out of it. It's not a deep song, there's not a whole lot of meaning around it. People just want to have a good time and sing along, and that's the ultimate sing-along song." Now "Cruise" has been nominated an Academy of Country Music Award for Single of the Year. In addition, the remixed version of the song featuring rapper Nelly has also earned a second nomination for Vocal Event of the Year. Florida Georgia Line has also been nominated for Vocal Duo of the Year, and their debut album Here's to the Good Times is nominated for Album of the Year. The intervening years have brought more efforts by both FGL and Nelly (among a number of other well-intentioned and like-minded artists) to correct that inequity. But “Baby you a song” isn’t just like Country Grammar — it is country grammar, a grammar that is as influential in country music today as ever. The song-about-a-song is a straightforward-sounding, meticulously-constructed earworm that hinges on the most appealing and specific version of the now-ubiquitous masculine country checklist (lusty descriptions of women, backroads, trucks). It turned out to be something of a “generational gauntlet,” as critic Jody Rosen puts it — particularly in the form of its blockbuster Nelly-featuring remix, released 10 years ago this week. Its massive success colored much of what came after its 24 record-breaking weeks atop the Hot Country Songs chart, whether that was songs trying to imitate it or the tidal wave of critical backlash.

Florida Georgia Line: Brian Kelley, Tyler Hubbard to Release Solo Music

It was, indeed, a turning point, on a scale even larger than Rosen had foreseen. “Cruise” emerged at the dawn of the streaming age, when genreless consumption — already a dominant mode — was on the cusp of taking over. The unbothered blending of country, rock and hip-hop influences that became Florida Georgia Line’s specialty would reshape country’s commercial sound completely, to the chagrin of both traditionalists and outsiders — and expand its reach exponentially. Experience Great Stirrup Cay, our idyllic private island in the Bahamas, when you cruise from Florida with Norwegian.

The 49th annual ACM Awards will be broadcast live from Las Vegas on Sunday, April 6 at 8pm ET/PT on CBS. Kelley knew the song would be the perfect fit for Florida Georgia Line, and he looks back fondly on that very special day. For our latest installment of Behind the Song, Radio.com talked with FGL's Kelley and Hubbard as well as Chase Rice, a singer and songwriter who also had a hand in turning the catchy song into an unfathomable hit.

The year was 2012 when a previously-unknown duo called Florida Georgia Line, made up of Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley, took over country radio waves with their feel-good, debut single, "Cruise." The song and the duo soon caught fire, and it's a flame that has yet to run out. Not only did "Cruise" reach the No. 1 spot on the Country Airplay chart, but it spent 24 weeks atop the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, an accomplishment that has only been surpassed by Sam Hunt's "Body Like A Back Road." "Cruise" went on to spend three weeks atop the Country Airplay chart—the most weeks at No. 1 on Country Airplay for a new act's first charted title since Gretchen Wilson's "Redneck Woman" in early 2004—and 24 weeks (over three different runs including the Nelly remix) atop the new Hot Country Songs chart. When the song reached its tenth week atop Hot Country Songs on May 18, 2013, it became the second song (Taylor Swift's "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together") to spend that many weeks at No. 1 since Buck Owens's "Love's Gonna Live Here" (16 weeks between October 1963 and February 1964).

News that Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley, the latter a Volusia County native and son of former Volusia County Council Chair Ed Kelley, had decided to pursue solo careers burned up the internet about a year ago, following the duo’s final official performance together on Aug. 31, 2022. Old Time Music is proud to have such a passionate and talented team of writers who share their love for music with our readers. Moi invited Kelley and Hubbard to his recording studio, where they recorded a demo of “Cruise,” a song they had been working on but had not yet finished. The chorus of the song was inspired by a chant that a fraternity brother of Kelley’s used to do. "It's really cool to be, from the start of that song on a couch in the house, to the studio, to singing it live and getting an award, to it being No. 1. It's the best feeling in the world and we're really humbled to be a part of such a special song," Kelley said.

On August 24, 2013, it logged its 24th week at No. 1, the longest run at No. 1 in the chart's 69-year history (the previous record was 21 weeks held jointly by three songs, the last of which was Webb Pierce's "In the Jailhouse Now" from February to June 1955). “Cruise” by Florida Georgia Line continues to resonate with fans of country music to this day. The song has been streamed over 1.7 billion times on Spotify alone, making it one of the most popular country songs of all time.

The album's fourth single, "Stay", was released in October 2013.[17] It was co-written and originally recorded by Black Stone Cherry, produced by Joey Moi and the music video featured Josh Henderson.[18] It reached number one on the Hot Country Songs chart and the Country Airplay chart in December 2013. As evidenced by the success of their debut single, Florida Georgia Line hit the ground running. Their 2012 album, Here’s to the Good Times, went double platinum, and established a strain of country music that was incredibly radio-friendly. So much so, in fact, that the duo sparked the creation of a subgenre known as “bro-country.” The subgenre is described as a combination of traditional country lyrics with elements of hip-hop, electronica, and other forms of pop music.

The song began when Kelley, Chase Rice and Jesse Rice (no relation) were sitting in Jesse's living room one afternoon. They had been writing another song when Kelley started playing something very different. She thinks of herself as a "song interpreter," but back in the '80s another country star convinced Emmylou to take a crack at songwriting.

The song is a mid-tempo in the key of B-flat major with a main chord pattern of B♭-F-Gm7-E♭.[14] It is about an attractive woman that the male narrator wants to cruise with in his pick-up truck.

Born and raised in Ormond Beach, the future country music star was a 2004 graduate of Seabreeze High School. There, he played high-school baseball on local diamonds and nurtured musical aspirations fueled by frequent visits to the Daytona Beach Bandshell. Every hit song has its own unique origin story, but few are as intertwined with serendipity and chance as “Cruise” by Florida Georgia Line.

The original song and the remix with rapper Nelly have sold 7 million copies in the US, leading to "Cruise" becoming the best-selling country digital song of all time and earning Diamond status (11x Platinum). It certainly makes sense that hip-hop influences felt as intuitive for FGL-generation country artists as for any others who have come of age since hip-hop became mainstream pop. Watching Nelly perform alongside the duo, though, is a stark reminder of how in that exchange of ideas, the money tends to only flow one way; that while it might feel like hip-hop is “in [FGL’s] DNA,” it’s not.

The early settlement included a colorful neighborhood known as Homebrew Alley which was erased by a 9.2-magnitude megathrust earthquake. Known as the Good Friday earthquake, it was the second most powerful ever recorded and dropped the shoreline nearly six feet in 1964.
